The adage is an old one: during a gold rush, it pays to be the one selling shovels.
No doubt, this idea predates any gold rush or the attribution from the late 1800s. The saying is a narrow example of a broader truth. Using the California gold rush as an example, there were many opportunities beyond selling shovels to be found in supplying a booming frontier that lacked basic necessities. In a more recent 'gold rush' of cryptocurrency, GPU makers and creators of coin exchange markets profit more reliably than anyone 'mining' or speculating on the 'coins' themselves.
AI is likely to be the same: reliable fortunes will be made building data centers, assembling servers and creating all the infrastructure needed to make AI possible. For the AI companies themselves, gambling that they will be able to make a profitable business using stolen data, the outcome is less certain. While theft has always been a tempting enterprise for the morally flexible, the risk means it seldom pays. (unless you're the British museum, or an employer engaging in wage theft)
Like the dom.com collapse of 2001, I wager there will be vast fortunes erased overnight when AI faces it's own 'correction'.
